“I’d lost confidence in my game,” conceded Sunday Oliseh candidly. “After training, my friend Taribo West said, ‘Come and take some shots at me.’ “I wasn’t a goalscorer; I was a defensive midfielder. But I took ten shots from outside the box and nine went in. OK, Taribo’s not a goalkeeper, but still. He said, ‘Do that against [Andoni] Zubizarreta.' “When the ball fell to me, I just stuck it. I caught it perfectly and it beat a great goalkeeper. It was even better because it clinched us victory over a great Spain team. It’s the proudest moment of my career and people back home always want to talk about it.”
There was only one atomic imperfection: it was scored one day early. “Now that would have been perfect!” said Oliseh on whether bagging the belter on a Sunday would have made it even better.
